Founded in 1492 by the Genoese, and the
birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte almost three centuries later, the small
town of Ajaccio was once completely fortified, but today there is little
evidence of this. Only the dominant citadel, located in the old section of
town, remains. Today, Ajaccio is the main town of southern Corsica with a
population of approximately 60,000 inhabitants. |
